Vietnam Weather in September 2024
Country: Vietnam

September is autumn in Northern Vietnam, the beginning of the rainy season in the Central Coast, the high rainy season in the Central Highlands and Southern Vietnam.

In Northern Vietnam the temperatures are more likely pleasant all over the region. There may be some days that the temperatures may get slightly higher but there are breezes that make the atmosphere really pleasant mostly.

There may be typhoons or tropical depressions which often make landfall in northern Vietnam or North of the Central Coast of Vietnam in September. During the time under impact of a typhoon, boat trips are canceled for a few days on Halong Bay and the Lan Ha Bay, between Co To and Quan Lan Islands (Quang Ninh Province) and the shore .

More daily rain with more rainfalls in September is found in the Central Highlands and Southern Vietnam. The temperatures in these two regions are mostly pleasant this month.

It is worth noting that Vietnam’s climate is strongly influenced by global climate change. The skinny and elongated geography of Vietnam with over 3,000km of coastline makes it more vulnerable to changes in the ocean, too. During the year under El Nino impact, the level of temperatures are visibly higher and much smaller rainfalls all over the country; and it is vice versa during the year with La Nina impact which causes more typhoons, more rain and lower temperatures.

Monsoons in Vietnam in September

In September there are three main monsoons affecting Vietnam:
- The Southeasterly Wind which causes pleasant temperatures in most of the North and which may cause showers in the affected regions;
-  The Southwesterly Wind, which comes from the Equator which causes daily short-lived and heavy rain and pleasant temperatures in the Central Highlands and southern Vietnam.
It is important to note that there is often a tropical convergence zone of which the axis is across the North of Vietnam or the Central Coast of Vietnam which causes long-lasting and heavy rain in the affected regions. This in combination with more active seasonal monsoon often causes floods and extreme weather.
- The sea and the offshore islands in northern Vietnam are to come under impact of the active Southeasterly Wind in the North and  very active Southwesterly Wind in the South in September : pleasant temperatures, rough sea mostly, especially during the times of typhoon or tropical depression.

What to expect from your holidays to Vietnam in September, where to go in Vietnam in September?

Taking the general weather conditions in Vietnam into consideration, for those travelers planning  trips to Vietnam or those who are on holidays in Vietnam in September, then there September be some notes as follows:

- September may be not a good time to travel to the far-northern mountains of Vietnam given that it is more likely to rain. While the rain in September is mostly short-lived, but bare hills or steep mountain slopes without forest September pose dangers in or right after heavy rain. During the impact of a tropical depression or typhoon, flash floods and landslides are expected. Flash floods have happened and accidents have been caused by extreme weather in the mountains. It might be good to consult a local travel agency in Vietnam with good experience to know if September of a certain year is good to travel to the far northern mountains of Vietnam.

The Red River Delta is a good place to travel to in September. It is autumn with often lovely sunshine, breezy air and pleasant temperatures.

Keep in mind that there may be typhoons or tropical depressions in northern Vietnam and/or in the North of the Central Coast of Vietnam (i.e : Thanh Hoa, Nghe An and Ha Tinh Provinces) in September, in which case travel between the inland and the islands in the affected areas are disrupted. Given climate change nowadays, this applies to islands all over Vietnam from the north to the south.

- The Central Coast of Vietnam is to have more tolerable or nice temperatures with rain in September. But in a year under impact of La Nina, expect more rain and pleasant temperatures in all over Vietnam including the Central Coast.

The region to the south of the Central Coast including Ninh Thuan and Binh Thuan is more likely to have more rain with pleasant temperatures in September.

- September is getting to be a good time for birding tours in Northern Vietnam as migratory bird species are to arrive by the end of the month. All resident birds are not in nesting or mating time and the birds are more active in September.

- September may be not a good time for birdwatching in: Bach Ma National Park, Cat Tien National Park, Da Lat, Bidoup-Nui Ba National Park, Deo Nui San (Di Linh Plateau, Lam Dong Province). It is the rainy season here and it often rains more often with bigger rainfalls in September compared to the months May-August. Bach Ma National Park is not accessible in a rain or in  wet weather. There is more rain and bigger rainfalls in the Central Highlands and southern Vietnam in September which may make your birding experience not that a wonderful one.

- The sea is not that calm all over Vietnam in September. And it is very rough during the time of typhoons or tropical depressions. Expect that travel between the inland and the islands are disrupted.

September is not a good time for beach holidays in Vietnam, except for years when El Nino is at work.

For those who plan a trip to the Central Highlands, expect heavy rain in this region in September and flash floods and land/rock slides. Be extra careful if you plan to travel between Da Lat and Nha Trang via the Khanh Le Pass which is vulnerable to landslides in rainy times.

Those planning holidays to Southern Vietnam in September, then you are likely to have a good time. The temperatures are more likely to be pleasant weather with daily shortlived rain. Avoid traveling in the traffic in flooded streets which are often found in heavy rain. The beaches in Vung Tau, Long Hai and Mui Ne, Phan Thiet are good options near Saigon Ho Chi Minh City.

Con Dao Islands, Phu Quoc Island are to have cloudy days with lovely temperatures of 26-31oC. But it has happened that these islands may be under impact of a typhoon or tropical depression in September and in such cases, expect rain and disrupt in travel between the island and the inland.

It is normal that typhoons and/or tropical depression, if any, in September then it is more likely to come to northern Vietnam. But it has happened that the Central Coast has got some and even if a typhoon or tropical depression makes landfall in northern Vietnam, islands all over Vietnam are affected.
