October is autumn in Northern Vietnam, the beginning of the rainy season in the Central Coast, the high rainy season in the Central Highlands and Southern Vietnam.
In Northern Vietnam the temperatures are more likely pleasant all over the region. There may be some days that the temperatures may get slightly higher but there are breezes that make the atmosphere really pleasant mostly.
There may be typhoons or tropical depressions which may make landfall either in northern Vietnam or the Central Coast of Vietnam in October. During the time under impact of a typhoon, boat trips are canceled for a few days on Halong Bay and the Lan Ha Bay, between Co To and Quan Lan Islands (Quang Ninh Province) and the shore. In many cases, traffic between the inland and the offshore islands in the Central Region and southern Vietnam are also disrupted in case of a typhoon in northern Vietnam.
More daily rain with more rainfalls in October is found in the Central Highlands and Southern Vietnam. The temperatures in these two regions are mostly pleasant this month.
It is worth noting that Vietnam’s climate is strongly influenced by global climate change. The skinny and elongated geography of Vietnam with over 3,000km of coastline makes it more vulnerable to changes in the ocean, too. During the year under El Nino impact, the level of temperatures are visibly higher and much smaller rainfalls all over the country; and it is vice versa during the year with La Nina impact which causes more typhoons, more rain and lower temperatures.
Monsoons in Vietnam in October
In October there are three main monsoons affecting Vietnam:
- The Southeasterly Wind which causes pleasant temperatures in most of the North and which causes occasional showers in the affected regions;
- The Northeasterly Wind which comes from Tibet or Siberia and which makes real winter in northern Vietnam and heavy and long-lasting rainy season in the Central Coast of Vietnam ;
- The Southwesterly Wind, which comes from the Equator which causes daily short-lived and heavy rain and pleasant temperatures in the Central Highlands and southern Vietnam.
It is important to note that there is often a tropical convergence zone of which the axis is across the Central Coast of Vietnam which causes long-lasting and heavy rain in the region. This in combination with more active seasonal monsoon often causes floods and extreme weather. The presence of the Tropical Convergence Zone with axis over the Central Region also makes the Southwesterly Monsoon (affecting southern Vietnam and the Central Highlands of Vietnam) and the Northeasterly Monsoon (if any) in northern Vietnam more active.
- The sea and the offshore islands are to come under impact of the active Southeasterly Wind or Northeasterly Wind in the North and very active Southwesterly Wind in the South in October : pleasant temperatures, rough sea mostly, especially during the times of typhoon or tropical depression.
