Dak Lak has the average altitudes of 300-800m above sea level. The terrain of Dak Lak includes:

- Mountainous areas in the North-East, East and South-East. The terrain is higher to the South-East and lower to the North-West of the province. The highest peaks are of Chu Yang Sin Range with peaks from above 1,500m above sea level (Chu Yang Sin 2,445m, Lang Biang 2,167m...). - Plateau or high plain areas account for most of Dak Lak's land: M'drak Plateau and Buon Ma Thuot Plateau. M'drak is located to the east with valleys surrounded by low hills and with average altitude 450-500m above sea level.

Buon Ma Thuot Plateau is basically flat with rolling hills of which the altitude is 800m to the North-West and 300m to the South-East.

- Buffer zone between the plateaus and the river basins is located to the North-West, higher to the east (200-300m) and lower to the west near the Cambodian border (140m)

- River basins created along the rivers: Serepok, Krong Ana, Krong No.

The biggest river system in Dak Lak is the Serepok River (or Srepok) with 2 main branches: Krong No and Krong Ana, and which flows north-westerly into Cambodia and which creates sublime waterfalls in Dak Lak. Serepok flows through Ratanakiri and discharges its water into the Mekong River at Strung Treng. The Mekong River gets all this water and flows through the Mekong Delta in southern Vietnam. Another river system is the Ba River (which is also known as Ia Drang River, Da Rang River, Eo Pa, La Pa depending on the locales it flows through).
