Kien Giang is located to the west of the Mekong Delta overlooking the Rach Gia Gulf. The province is bordered to the north by Cambodia (56.8km borderline), to the east by An Giang and Can Tho, to the south by Hau Giang, Bac Lieu and Ca Mau, and to the west by the Rach Gia Gulf. The provincial capital of Kien Giang is Rach Gia City.

Geography

There are 137 offshore islands in the Gulf of Rach Gia of which the biggest is Phu Quoc Island with several sandy beaches which is always among the hottest destinations for luxury beach vacations and holidays in Vietnam.

Kien Giang has diverse terrains: flat deltas, marshland, islands and mountains. The terrain is higher to the north-east (0.8-1.2m above sea level) and lower to the south-west (0.2-0.4m above sea level). The land area of Kien Giang is crisscrossed by several canals, creeks and rivers. The coastline of the province is 212km with several patches of forests which are a part of the Global Biosphere Reserves. There are the U Minh Thuong National Park and Phu Quoc National Parks with diverse floras and faunas of which many are listed as endangered species.

Weather and Climate

The climate at Kien Giang is tropical monsoon with 2 seasons per year: Rainy season (May-October) and dry season. The annual rainfall is around 1,800-2,200mm.

1/ Rach Gia

Rach Gia City with 7km of coastline and blended culture of Vietnamese, Khmer and Chinese communities. There are temples, markets and a night market that you should not miss on your trip to Rach Gia.

2/ Phu Quoc Island

Phu Quoc Island and other offshore islands in the Rach Gia Gulf (Nam Du, Hon Tre, Hai Tac, Ba Lua, Tho Chu). Except for Phu Quoc Island, all the others are off the tourist track.

3/ U Minh Thuong National Park

U Minh Thuong National Park (50km south of Rach Gia City) with amazing ecosystem: total forest area is 21,107hectares of which the core zone is 8,038 hectares and the buffer zone is 13,069 hectares.

4/ Ha Tien Beach Town

How to get there and away

Rach Gia City, the provincial capital of Kien Giang, is 240km from Ho Chi Minh City and 115km from Can Tho City. There is an airport at Rach Gia with daily flights from/to Ho Chi City.

There is a border-crossing between Vietnam and Cambodia at Xa Xia, Ha Tien (Kien Giang, Vietnam) and Prek Chak (Kampot, Cambodia). It’s 12km from Ha Tien to the border check point.
