Phu Tho Province is located in the North-West of Vietnam; bordered to the north-east by Tuyen Quang Province, to the east by Vinh Phuc Province, to the south-east by Ha Tay Province (Hanoi now), to the south by Hoa Binh Province, to the west by Son La Province and to the west and north-west by Yen Bai Province.

The capital of Phu Tho Province is Viet Tri City, 80km north-west of Hanoi.
Phu Tho has hilly terrains to the northern area of the province and some flat plains in the Red River Delta.

1/ Viet Tri City, Hung Kings Temple
Viet Tri City was the area of Phong Chau, the capital city of the ancient Van Lang Kingdom, the first Vietnamese-identity kingdom in history, which dates back to 2,879B.C. At Viet Tri, you can still visit the complex of temples dedicated to Hung Kings, the founder kings of Vietnam.

2/ Xuan Son National Park
Further to the west of Phu Tho, near Son La Province and at the foot of the Hoang Lien Mountain Range (stretching from Lao Cai Province to Lai Chau, Yen Bai, Son La and Phu Tho Provinces), there's a system of primeval forest on karst mountains of Xuan Son National Park which is home to diverse floral and fauna systems. The national park of Xuan Son is 80km from Viet Tri City and 120km from Hanoi.

3/ Chan Mong – Tram Than Ambush Site
Phu Tho was where major divisions of Vietnam's army sought respite after battles during the wars. During the war against the French, Phu Tho was where Vietnam launched attacked into the Red River Delta.
There are 2 sites which mark important battles that you may want to visit: Chan Mong – Tram Than where ambush against the French troops during Operation Lorraine and Tu Vu which was the site of a major battle during the Battle of Hoa Binh.

There hotels of decent standard and guest houses in Viet Tri City and different towns in Phu Tho. Luxury hotels are not yet found in the province. Homestay with the Dao People is available at Xuan Son National Park.
How to get there
There 2 main routes to get to Phu Tho from Hanoi: via Route 32 and via Route 2. Viet Tri is the capital city of the province, 70km from Hanoi via Route 2.
