Quang Nam is in the Central Region of Vietnam. The province is bordered to the north by Da Nang and Hue, to the east by the East Vietnam Sea, to the south by Quang Ngai and Kon Tum, to the south-west by Kon Tum and to the west by Laos. The provincial capital is Tam Ky City.
Quang Nam Geography
The terrain of Quang Nam includes: mountainous to the west, buffer zone with low hills and valleys in the middle, narrow strip of flat plains and coastal region to the east. The terrain is higher to the west and lower to the east. Quang Nam has a coastline of 125km. The province also has offshore islands some of which are popular tourist spots.
Quang Nam has a complicated river system with several crisscrossing rivers of which the big ones are:
- The Thu Bon River starts its 95km course from Nong Son District to the west of the province and discharges its water into the sea at Cua Dai Estuary at Hoi An.
- The Truong Giang River with total length of 67km starting from Cua Dai (Hoi An) flowing along the coast southwards and discharges its water into the sea at Ky Ha (Nui Thanh District, near Quang Ngai Province).
- The Vu Gia River (52km) starting from Dong Giang District and discharges its water into the Yen River (Da Nang) and Thu Bon River at Dai Loc District (Quang Nam).
Quang Nam Weather and Climate
The climate of Quang Nam is monsoon tropic with 2 seasons: rainy season from August through December and dry season from January through July. The temperatures are from 12oC to above 38oC. The hottest months are April, May, June and July. The temperatures are lower in the mountains to the west than in the coastal region. Quang Nam doesn’t have a cold winter as in northern Vietnam. There are typhoons and floods during the rainy season. The annual rainfall is 2,000-2,500mm.

Hoi An Old Town and My Son Cham Ruins are listed to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites and have been extremely popular to foreign travelers to Vietnam as well as Vietnamese tourists. The Thu Bon River right near Hoi An Old Town. A river boat trip at sunset is recommended.

How To Travel To Quang Nam & Getting There and Away
Quang Nam is connected to other provinces in Vietnam via Route 1A along the eastern coast and western Ho Chi Minh Road. These 2 roads runs north-south. There are different roads between the east and the west: 14B, 14D, 14E connecting the 2 main roads above.
Hoi An is 32km from Da Nang City and Tam Ky is 70km from Da Nang. The roads are good between these locations. There is also a coastal road between Hoi An and Tam Ky which is 50km away from each other.
There are different daily trains between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) which stop at Quang Nam and Da Nang: Nui Thanh, Tam Ky and Da Nang.
