Thua Thien Hue is a province in the Central Coast of Vietnam. The province is much better known to tourists by its capital – Hue City which was the capital city of Vietnam in 1802-1945. Hue City is among the most popular tourist destinations in Vietnam.

Geography of Thua Thien Hue

Thua Thien Hue is bounded by Quang Tri to the north, by the East Vietnam Sea to the east, by Da Nang and Quang Nam to the south and by Laos to the west.

The terrain of Hue includes high mountain ranges to the west and to the south of the province with several peaks over 1,000m above sea level. It is mostly flat along the coast with several lagoons by the sea.

Weather and Climate of Thua Thien Hue, Best Time to Visit

While Thua Thien Hue has a tropical monsoon climate but the terrain makes it distinctly different to most other places in Vietnam. It is hot and mostly dry in the summer from April through August. During this time the province is mostly influenced by the southwesterly wind which is hot and dry due to the feuhn effect. There are sometimes Southeasterly Monsoon blowing into Hue from the sea which cause short-lived torrential rains in June and July and which help to cool down the air a bit. The temperatures in the summer are often between 29-40oC.

The rainy season in Thue Thien Hue is often from September through January and most rainfall is found between October and December with long-lasting torrential rains. There are often floods and landslides in the province during this time and travel in Thua Thien Hue is not recommended, especially in the mountains.

The weather conditions may get really bad in October and November if there is a typhoon or tropical depression which always cause incessant rain in Thua Thien Hue for several days. Streets are flooded mostly.

The long-lasting in Thua Thien Hue is caused by the humid and cool Northeasterly Monsoon which prevails in the winter months. This wind is blocked by the high mountains to the west and south of the province. The annual rainfall in Hue is about 2,700mm and that at Bach Ma is about 4,000mm, the highest annual rainfall in Vietnam. The temperatures in the winter in Hue are between 14-29oC.

The most beautiful weather in Thua Thien Hue is often found in between February and April when it is mostly dry, sunny and pleasant temperatures. And certainly visiting the land during this time brings wonderful experiences.

Rivers in Thua Thien Hue

- The O Lau River starts east course in Phong Dien District, northwest of Thua Thien Hue, on the altitude of 900m above sea level. The river follows a ziz-zag course to the east and discharges its water into the Tam Giang Lagoon at the northern tip. The main course is 66km in length.

- The Perfume River (Song Huong) is a system of rivers with 3 main tributaries: The Bo River, Hue Trach River and Ta Trach River. The Bo River starts from A Luoi, on an altitude of 650m, flowing through Phong Dien, Quang Dien and merges in with Perfume River before discharging into the Tam Giang Lagoon. The total length is 94km.

The Huu Trach starts at A Luoi – Nam Dong on an altitude of 500m flowing its course through Binh Dien and merges with the Ta Trach River near the Tuan Bridge (near Minh Mang’s tomb). The course is 51km long.

The Ta Trach River starts its course in Nam Dong on an altitude of 900m flowing through Huong Thuy and merges with the Ta Trach near Minh Mang’s tomb. The total length is 54km.

- The Nong River, the Truoi River, the Bu Lu River, the Cau Hai River are all short rivers 20-24km near the Bach Ma National Park

- The system of lagoon along the coast of Thua Thien Hue from the northwest-southeast: The Tam Giang Lagoon (25km), the Thuy Tu Lagoon (An Truyen, Thanh Lam, Ha Trung, Thuy Tu with total length of 33km), the Cau Hai Lagoon (22km).

Besides, there are several amazing off-the-beaten track tourist attractions in Hue City which can be visited on day trips from Hue as follows:

1/ A Shau Valley in A Luoi District

The valley is 70km west of Hue City. During the war this was a strategically important point on Ho Chi Minh Trail. Also, from here men and ammunition were prepared for attacks to the the coastal city of Hue. Dense triple-canopy jungles, mountainous terrain and sparsely populated regions in Laos were all favorable to the PAVN. And there were several brutal battles back then.

Visiting the A Shau Valley you can recall the fierce the Battle of A Shau Valley (from 9-March to 10-March-1966), Battle of Hamburger Hill – Hill 937 or A Bia Mountain (from 10-May to 20-May-1969) and Battle of Hill 935 - Ripcord Support Fire Base ( from 1-July to 23-July-1970).

2/ The coastal lagoons of Pha Tam Giang, Thuy Tu and Dam Cau Hai

These places are exotic which teems with amazing daily life of fishing communities. You can visit these places on bicycle tours or on photography tours from Hue City. Alternatively you can choose to bike for a whole day from Hue to Da Nang or vice versa.

3/ The Bach Ma National Park

This national park is the most diverse in ecosystem with representative species of fauna and flora in all the North, the Central Region and the South of Vietnam.

4/ The Lang Co Beach

The pristine sandy beaches at Lang Co offer great luxury beach holidays and luxury golf vacations.

5/ The Hai Van Pass (Pass of Ocean Clouds)

The sublime pass offers amazing ocean, mountain and forest landscape in the south of Thua Thien Hue. You can day trip to this pass from Hue or Da Nang or you can visit it on the way between these two cities.
