Geography of Bac Giang
The terrain of Bac Giang includes mountainous areas (72%) and low-hill areas (28%) with small plains in between. There are patches of primeval forest in the mountainous areas while the hilly areas are covered with litchi plantations.
There are three main rivers in Bac Giang: Cau, Thuong and Luc Nam. These rivers discharge the water into the Red River and the Thai Binh River. The Cau River forms a natural border between Bac Ninh and Bac Giang running northwest-southeast. The Thuong River starts its course from the north of the province running north-south. The Luc Nam River starts from the mountains of Yen Tu running northeast-southwest and then north-south.
Climate
Bac Giang shares the weather pattern with those provinces in the Northeast of Vietnam. The province has a tropical monsoon climate with dry winter from late November through February, spring from late February through April, summer from May through late August, autumn from late August to early November. The temperatures in Bac Giang are lower than the Red River Delta while slightly higher than the other provinces in the Northeast of Vietnam. The average annual rainfall is 1,533mm.
During the summer – autumn months, Bac Giang may be hit by tropical storms which are often much weakened thanks to the high mountain range of Yen Tu – Dong Trieu, hence less destructive power.
