Travel Guide to Mui Ne, Phan Thiet
in Vietnamese Mui Ne literally means the Cape of Shelter and Mui Ne was a place that fishing boats took shelter from storms. The area was inhabited by fishing communities and there are some left nowadays.
Geographically, the coastline stretches from west to east from Phan Thiet City to Ham Tien Market for 17km where it curves and goes south into the sea for 7-8 few kilometers further. The strip of sandy beaches along this piece of the coastline is over a dozen kilometers in length. On the beaches, there are swaying palms and luxury beach resorts covered in lush green.
From Cape Mui Ne the coastline travels further northeast where there are several more sandy beaches and beach resorts but it is beyond the scope of this travel guide which is meant for Mui Ne only.
Weather and Climate, Best Time to Visit
It is dry season with pleasant temperatures (20-30oC) in December – February. It starts getting warm from March, then gets hot in April and May. Then the temperatures turn nicer in June and July with plenty of sunshine, lovely breezes and only some short-lived rains. So the best time can either be in the early year or in June and July.
The rainy season starts from late August early September but there are still beautiful days with sunshine in August. The rainy season with wettest days are in September – October with gloomy skies and sometimes torrential rain.
November is a transitional time of the year with overcast skies and some rain. The temperatures range from pleasant to cool.
What to See, Tourist Attractions in Mui Ne
1/ Poshanu Cham Tower (Po Sah Inu)
The Cham Tower is what left of the once thriving Champa Kingdom in the Central and South of the Central Coast of Vietnam. In the 15th century C.E more towers were built to worship a Cham Princess named Poshanu, hence the name of the Cham Tower. The Cham Tower is in Phu Hai, 7km from Phan Thiet City.
2/ The sandy beaches
Bai Rang Beach is at Ham Tien Ward, right in the center of Mui Ne. The beach is quite flat with fine sand and swaying palms where lots of luxury hotels and beach resorts are found.
Hon Rom Beach is further to the east of Mui Ne, 30km east of Phan Thiet City center. This is a new area with clean water and pristine landscape. But as of writing there are quite some construction works in this area.
Apart from these two beaches, there are several ones along the 20-30km of coastline from Phan Thiet City to Hon Rom Beach.
3/ Mui Ne Fishing Village
The Mui Ne Market is right at the curve of the coastline between Ham Tien and Cape Mui Ne, 18km east of Phan Thiet City center. The village is a wonderful place to experience the daily life of local fishing communities: fixing boats, sun-drying fish, fixing nets...
4/ Ham Tien Market
The market is in the center of Mui Ne with lots of stuffs for the locals as well as for tourists.
5/ Mui Ne Market
The Mui Ne Market is further to the east of Mui Ne, 6-7km north of the tip of Cape Mui Ne. The market has more foodstuff from catch by fishermen on their nightly fishing trip. There is dry seafood for Vietnamese tourist to bring home as souvenirs after their holidays to Mui Ne.
6/ Red Sand Dune
You can go sandboarding at the Red Sand Dune or just have great views of the sea from the top of the Red Sand Dune.

7/ The Most Beautiful Ocean Road in Vietnam
The Provincial Route DT716 and DT716B to between Phan Thiet City (Vo Nguyen Giap Street) via Mui Ne and The White Sand Dune. This road which is nearly 60km offers sensational landscape and seascape and you do not want to miss it on holidays to Mui Ne.
8/ The White Sand Dune (Bau Trang)
A lovely surgarly white sand dune by the turquoise blue ocean in Bac Binh District, Binh Thuan Province, 50km northeast of Phan Thiet City. The ocean-front road between Mui Ne and the sand dune is spectacular!
9/ Bau Sen
A lotus flower lake, a refreshing oasis amid the desert. The lake is just by the White Sand Dune.

11/ Museum for Fish Sauce and Ancient Cham Fishing Village
The museum of 1,600m2 is in Phu Hai which displays the 300-year history of the fishing village from the Champa Kingdom times through the Nguyen Dynasty and French times. Visiting the village you can learn about the village life, the process of making fish sauce. Besides, you can engage into the daily work of local people by learning to make salt on salt fields

There are several luxury beach resorts and luxury beach hotels in Mui Ne, right on the waterfront. There is a wide range of prices you could choose from. For better rates, there are family-run hotels and homestay across the road some of which do not offer convenience for accessing the beach though.
Getting there and away
1/ By road
Phan Thiet is 200km from Ho Chi Minh City (or Saigon), the drive takes 5 hours via Route 1 and 2.5 hours via the expressways: Long Thanh – Dau Giay and Dau Giay-Phan Thiet.
The road conditions are very good especially with the new expressway Long Thanh – Dau Giay and Dau Giay-Phan Thiet. The highway requires an extra fee and it may be good to make it clear to the driver, in case you hire a car, as to who pay the road tolls.
2/ By train
There are local trains from Saigon to Phan Thiet which stops at Phan Thiet Railway Station or Muong Man Railway Station. You had better get off the train at Phan Thiet Train Station. The Muong Man is far from Mui Ne. The train journey takes 4-5 hours. There are trains between Saigon and Phan Thiet which offer some level of comfort and luxury.
Getting around Mui Ne
There are several choices related to how to get around Mui Ne. The little town is composed of one road running along the coastline stretching for 12km. You can hire a bicycle, motorbike, a scooter, a private car or a jeep to travel among the places in Mui Ne and in the neighborhood.
