Nghe An is located to the north of the Central Region of Vietnam. While Vietnam is a skinny country running from north to south, Nghe An is right at the north of the slim area in the Central Region.

Geography

The province is bordered to the north and west and south-west by Laos, to the north and north-east by Thanh Hoa, to the east by the East Vietnam Sea, to the south by Ha Tinh. Nghe An is the biggest province in Vietnam in area. The provincial capital is Vinh City.

The terrain of Nghe An is complicated with mountainous topography accounting for 83% of the provincial area. The terrain is higher to the north-west and lower to the south-east of the province.

The highest peak in Nghe An is Pulaileng (2,711m above sea level) located to the north-west of the province (Ky Son District), and the lowest point 0.2m above sea level is located in the east (Quynh Luu, Yen Thanh, Dien Chau Districts). Given the short distance from west to east of Nghe An, it is easy to understand the steep terrain the province has.

The Truong Son Mountain Range, which runs almost the full length of Vietnam from north to south, is to the west of Nghe An. The area of Truong Son Range in Nghe An is fully covered in dense forests which are listed to the Global Biosphere Reserves by the UNESCO.

The 2 biggest rivers in Nghe An are the Hieu River, Lam River (Ca River). There are several canals and streams in the province, but agriculture in Nghe An often suffers from either serious droughts or bad floods.

Weather and Climate

Nghe An has a tropical monsoon climate with 4 seasons: summer is hot from April to August with south-westerly winds; winter is from November through February with north-easterly winds. It rains a lot in Nghe An from May through October; there are often bad typhoons during this time.

The climate of Nghe An is among the harshest in Vietnam. The province constantly suffers from floods, typhoons and heat. The temperatures may often get to 43oC in the summer. In some areas to the west of the province, there may be snow sometimes in the winter. The annual rainfall is between 1,200-2,000mm.

While Nghe An has many popular tourist attractions for Vietnamese domestic tourists, the province is quite off the way for most foreign visitors. Only some adventurous travelers who make their trips northwards from the former DMZ by motorbike or by train would visit Nghe An.

Unless you have your own means of transport, visiting Nghe An is not that convenient. There are several tour companies in Nghe An servicing mostly within the province. Local travel agencies cater mostly to Vietnamese tourists.

- Vinh Airport is 8km from the city center. There are flights between Vinh and Hanoi, Buon Ma Thuot and Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon).

- There is one international border-crossing between Nam Can (Nghe An, Vietnam) and Namkan (Xieng Khouang, Laos).
