October is autumn in Northern Vietnam, the rainy season in the Central Coast, high rainy season with pleasant temperatures in the Central Highlands, Southern Vietnam.
There may be typhoons or tropical depressions which often disrupt holidays and tours in the North of the Central Coast of Vietnam, and sometimes Northern Vietnam. In these cases, boat trips on Halong Bay are often banned and torrential rain may cause floods in the Central Coast, especially the western regions of the North of the Central Coast, flash floods and landslides, rock slides in the far northern mountains.
In the Central Highlands and Southern Vietnam, there is more heavy rain in the afternoon everyday. Depending on climatic patterns of a specific year that it may be prolonged rain with gloomy skies for a few days, or it is sunny mostly in daytime and it rains only in the late afternoon.
Be extra cautious if you take part on a flooded road with running water and open sewage. Exercise good care if you travel to the far-northern mountains, mountains to the west of the Central Coast (including North of the Central Coast), and the Central Highlands as heavy rain poses fatal threats from flash floods and landslides.
General Weather Patterns in Vietnam in October
In October there are three main monsoons affecting Vietnam: Northeasterly, Southeasterly, Southwesterly.
- The Northeast, Northwest and lowland of Northern Vietnam often have the Southeasterly Wind which brings along moisture and which makes the temperatures pleasant. The wind may cause high precipitations in these regions in October.
- There are also spells of the Northeasterly Wind which brings along cool and moist air to the North of Vietnam, and the Central Coast of Vietnam. This wind causes dry and extremely pleasant weather in Northern Vietnam but causes long-lasting torrential rain in the Central Coast of Vietnam.
- The remainder of the country including the Central Highlands and Southern Vietnam is to have the Southwesterly Wind. This wind causes more rain in the Central Highlands and Southern Vietnam. October is often the high rainy season in the Central Highlands and Southern Vietnam and the temperatures are just pleasant.
The same Southwesterly wind normally causes dry heat and high temperatures in the Central Coast due to the foehn effect but this is not the case in October. Because there is the Tropical Interconvergence Zone of which the axis is normally across the Central Coast of Vietnam and which tends to shift this wind direction and causes rain in this region. Besides, the Central Coast may be under influence of the Northeasterly Wind. The two latter factors along with the high mountains to the west cause prolonged and torrential rain in the Central Coast (including the North of the Central Coast).
What to expect from your holidays to Vietnam in October, where to go in Vietnam in October?
Taking the general weather conditions in Vietnam into consideration, for those travelers planning holidays to Vietnam or those who are on vacations in Vietnam in October, then there may be some notes as follows:
- Those planning an adventure tour, a sightseeing trip, a family vacation in the far northern mountains of Vietnam in October should expect some days with heavy to torrential rain which may disrupt your travel plan. It usually but not always occurs that each time there is a new spell of the cool Northeasterly Wind hitting the region, then it should rain a couple of days, the temperatures drop and it turns dry again.
With the presence of the cool Northeasterly Wind, it is less likely that a typhoon, if any, would hit northern Vietnam. Most typhoons, which has the tendency to travel towards the inland of Northern Vietnam in October, are likely to be pushed southward by cool air masses.
- All of the Central Coast of Vietnam is to have prolonged and heavy rain in October due to the Northeasterly Wind which helps accumulate clouds and due to a Intertropical Convergence Zone with the axis across the region.
- Except for a few days of rain caused by each new spell of the cool Northeasterly Wind, the North mostly enjoys dry days with breezes and pleasant temperatures. When it is dry, October is a good time for junk cruises on Halong Bay as it is often clear skies and soft lighting : you have lovely photos of the islands. October is mostly a nice time for adventure tours, hiking tours in the far northern mountains of Vietnam.
- October is a good time for bird watching tours as migratory bird species are present in Vietnam on their fall migration, and bird parks and national parks in Vietnam teem with wildlife. The best sites for birding in Vietnam in October include : Cuc Phuong National Park, Xuan Thuy National Park, Cat Tien National Park. The weather pattern in the Central Highlands is not clear as sometimes it rains only at the end of each day and sometimes long-lasting rain. In case of dry weather in day time, October is a fantastic time to go birding in the Central Highlands of Vietnam : Da Lat, Bidoup-Nui Ba National Park, Deo Nui San (Di Linh Plateau, Lam Dong Province).
- October is not a good time to go for beach holidays or for island vacations in Vietnam. The beaches in the Central Coast (including the South Central Coast) are not to have sunny days. Con Dao Islands, Phu Quoc Island are to have cloudy days with rough sea.
