May is summer in the North of Vietnam, the dry and hot season in the Central Coast, the beginning of the rainy season in the Central Highlands and South of Vietnam.
Due to the thermal hot air trough to the west of Vietnam that there are often heat strikes in the extreme Northwest, part of the Central Coast (from Nghe An to Hue), part of the Central Highlands and South of Vietnam. The temperatures in the affected regions may reach 36-40oC.
Short-lived showers may come more often on a daily basis in the Central Highlands and South of Vietnam providing much needed water for familial use and agriculture, helping the Mekong Delta against salt intrusion. The rain also helps the temperatures more pleasant.
Below is our statistics of Vietnam weather in May 2020.
1/ North of Vietnam
First week of 2020 was with mostly sun, clouds, isolated t-storms, pleasant temperatures alternated by hot ones. High temperatures (36-37oC) were found in all sub regions in the North of Vietnam.
- Northeast of Vietnam (Lang Son, Cao Bang, Bac Kan, Ha Giang, Thai Nguyen): mostly sun, clouds, isolated t-storms and rain, 21-37oC. Dong Van Plateau had sun, clouds, t-storms on a day, 17-28oC.
- Northwest of Vietnam:
+ Hoa Binh, Yen Bai, Lao Cai: sun, clouds, isolated t-storms, 21-39oC. Sapa had sun, clouds, 14-27oC. Mu Cang Chai had sun, clouds, 18-31oC. Mai Chau had sun, clouds, some isolated t-storms, 22-39oC.
+ Son La, Dien Bien, Lai Chau: sun, clouds, and isolated t-storms, 18-38oC. Moc Chau had sun, clouds, isolated t-storms, 18-30oC.
- Lowlands (Halong Bay, Hai Phong, Hanoi, Thai Binh, Ninh Binh): had mostly sun, clouds, isolated rain, 23-32oC in Halong Bay and Hai Phong, 24-37oC in Hanoi and the Red River Delta.
2/ The North of the Central Region (Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh)
The first week of May was mostly with sun, clouds, 23-37oC.
3/The coastal areas in the Central Region of Vietnam (Central Coast of Vietnam including: Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Hue, Da Nang, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Phu Yen, Binh Dinh, Khanh Hoa, Ninh Thuan, Binh Thuan)
In the first week of May 2020, the Central Coast of Vietnam had nice weather: mostly sun, clouds, pleasant temperatures.
- Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Hue: sun, clouds, 23-38oC.
- Da Nang, Hoi An: sun, clouds, 24-35oC.
- Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, Phu Yen: sun, clouds, 24-34oC.
- Khanh Hoa, Ninh Thuan, Binh Thuan: sun and clouds, 24-34oC.
4/ The Central Highlands of Vietnam (Kon Tum, Gia Lai - Pleiku, Dak Lak - Buon Ma Thuot, Lam Dong)
May is the beginning of the rainy season and it may get warm at mid day sometimes at the beginning of the month. The temperatures get more pleasant coming toward to the end of the month.
In the first week was mostly with sun, some isolated t-storms, 20-38oC. Da Lat had sun, clouds, some isolated t-storms, 15-30oC.
5/The South of Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Tay Ninh, Vung Tau, Dong Nai, and the Mekong Delta)
May is the beginning of the rainy season in the South of Vietnam with more and more daily showers and t-storms. The temperatures may still be warm at the beginning but get nicer at the end of the month.
In the first week of May 2020, the South of Vietnam had mostly sun and hot temperatures, some isolated t-storms and showers.
Vung Tau, Saigon, Mekong Delta had sun, clouds, isolated t-storms, 27-32oC in Vung Tau, 25-36oC in Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta.
- Dong Nai, Binh Duong, Binh Phuoc: sun, clouds, t-storms, 25-37oC.
- Con Dao Islands had sun, clouds, strong winds on some days, some t-storms, 27-29oC.
- Phu Quoc Island had sun, clouds, some isolated rain and t-storms, 27-32oC.
