April is spring in Northern Vietnam, the dry season with warm temperatures in the Central Coast, the dry season with pleasant and sometimes warm temperatures in the Central Highlands, and the dry season with warmest temperatures Southern Vietnam.
General Weather Patterns in Vietnam in April
The Northeast and lowlands of Northern Vietnam may undergo the first 7-10 days of April with moist air, fog and light drizzles which is due to weaker and more damp Northeasterly Wind meetings with the Southeasterly Winds. The annoying damp air weather in Northern Vietnam should be ended by a heat strike or a new spell of the Northeasterly Wind. From mid of April, these two regions should enjoy dry and sunny weather again. The temperatures may be pleasant and may get warm from the third week.
The Northwest of Vietnam should enjoy dry and sunny weather mostly. But parts of the Northwest such as Hoa Binh, Lao Cai, Dien Bien may be affected by high temperature air troughs which may make the affected regions experience high temperatures of 35-36oC. The rest of the Northwest should still enjoy pleasant temperatures of 20-33oC.
The North of the Central Coast is in the dry season. Part of this region should have lovely sunshine with pleasant temperatures while some other areas may experience hot temperatures of 35-36oC. The reason is again due to atmospheric circulation of the air troughs (high temperatures) in the atmosphere over Southwest of China, in Thailand and in Laos...
Of the mid Central Coast, Quang Binh should have days with temperatures over 36-38oC. The reason is the same as above and due to the foehn effect. Unless under impact of the foehn wind, the other provinces in the Central Coast should enjoy lovely sunshine and temperatures of 24-33oC.
The Central Highlands enjoy dry season with pleasant temperatures mostly. But there are places on low altitudes and under impact of the hot air troughs, then the temperatures may surpass 35-36oC at mid day. The temperatures remain nice mostly in the morning and afternoon.
The South of Vietnam is in the dry season with the hottest temperatures found in a year. The Mekong Delta should still enjoy pleasant sunshine and temperatures in the first half of April though.
Given the general weather patterns as above, the weather in Northern Vietnam in April should still be fine for adventure tours and sightseeing tours. Those on trekking tours may experience strong sun from late morning through early afternoon.
Those on adventure holidays in the Central Coast of Vietnam like bike tours should experience strong sun and warm temperatures in various places. Travelers on sightseeing tours should still enjoy great time.
Those who plan to travel to the Central Highlands in April should have great holidays with fresh air, mild sunshine and pleasant temperatures mostly.
April is the best time for beach holidays and island vacations in Vietnam, be it in the Central Coast or in southern Vietnam. During this period you should have lovely sunshine on the beaches. All water sports, boat tours, scuba-diving tours, snorkeling-tours should operate smoothly. The sea should be calm all over Vietnam in April thanks to weak or absence of the Northeasterly Wind.
The best destinations for families on holidays in Vietnam in April should be Ha Giang, Ninh Binh, Halong Bay, Hue, Hoi An, Nha Trang, Con Dao Islands and Phu Quoc Island.
April is the best time for golf holidays in all over Vietnam from the North through the Central Coast, Central Highlands and the South of Vietnam. This month is also the best time for luxury boat cruises on Halong Bay, on the Nha Trang Bay and on the Mekong River.
Paradissa Monitoring of Notable Weather Factors Affecting All of Vietnam in April 2023
April 2023 started with normal weather patterns in the Northeast and lowlands of North Vietnam: light rain, fog, moist air. This type of weather lasted for the first 2-3 days and was lessened by the high temperatures air troughs in the atmosphere over the northwest and west of the country.
The hot air caused a brief heat strike in several regions in Vietnam with temperatures of over 35oC to 38oC. Even the lowlands in northern Vietnam suffered high temperatures for nearly a couple of days.
The moist air weather was ended by a new spell of the cool Northeasterly Wind hitting Vietnam on 8-April. So was the heat strike.
High temperature air troughs formed and caused high temperatures over 36oC in several regions in Vietnam; some regions suffered more due to the foehn effect:
- Northwest: Son La, Hoa Binh, Lao Cai;
- Mid Central Coast: Quang Binh;
- South Vietnam: Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong, Dong Nai, Tay Ninh.
There was unseasonal rain across the Central Highlands and South of Vietnam which was great for agriculture and was good for bringing temperatures down briefly. The Central Highlands and South of Vietnam had been in dry season and were desperate for water to irrigate agriculture and for family use. Places in the Mekong Delta were suffering from lack of fresh water and soil salinization and alkanization.
The cool Northeasterly Wind was strengthened soon after arrival into Vietnam which caused nice temperatures in most of Northern Vietnam and in the Central Coast (including North of the Central Coast). And the strong wind caused rough seas in all of Vietnam (including the sea areas around the Con Dao and Phu Quoc Islands) from 8-April.
The South of Vietnam did not enjoy nice temperatures by the Northeasterly Wind. The temperatures remained high over 35-37oC in places in Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong, Dong Nai and Tay Ninh. The provinces along the coast and in the Mekong Delta had nicer temperatures of 24-34oC. Unseasonal rain continued in Southern Vietnam provided much needed water and brief fresh air.
The cool Northeasterly Wind weakened on 10-April which in combination with strengthening of the humid Southeasterly Wind caused foggy and wet weather in the Northeast and lowland of Northern Vietnam on 10 and 11-April-2023. The wet weather lasted in the Northeast and lowlands of Northern Vietnam till 15-April after a shower and impact of hot air troughs.
In the South of Vietnam, there had been a heat strike with highest temperatures surpassing 37oC in several places. The heat strike was ended by torrential shower on 15-April. There were showers across the Central Highlands, too.
A new weak spell of the cool Northeasterly Wind on 24-April caused lovely weather in the Northeast, lowlands of Northern Vietnam, part of the Northwest of Vietnam.
Another spell of the cool Northeasterly Wind on 29-April caused rain and nice temperatures in all of Northern Vietnam and part of the North of the Central Coast. The temperatures turned slightly in the mid Central Coast. It remained hot in part of the Central Highlands and all of Southern Vietnam.
Right after the arrival of the cool wind there was torrential rain in the Northeast and Northwest of Vietnam accompanied by strong gusts of wind. The rain and wind destroyed crops and several hundred houses in Thai Nguyen, Tuyen Quang, Cao Bang, Yen Bai, Lao Cai, Son La, Dien Bien and Lai Chau. Several places were temporarily flooded due to heavy rain including Sapa a hotspot tourist destination in Vietnam.

1/North Vietnam
North Vietnam entered April with a very familiar weather pattern which is normally found: pleasant temperatures, moist air, isolated light rain.
The sub-regional weather in Northern Vietnam at the beginning of April 2023
- Northeast: fog, clouds, rain, damp air, 22-30oC;
- Northwest: sun, clouds, some isolated rain, 20-32oC;
- Lowlands: light rain, moist air, cloud, 23-31oC.
There were some places with high temperatures due to expanding high-temperature air troughs and foehn wind (some places in Hoa Binh, Son La, Lao Cai).
The weather turned dry and cold when a new spell of the cool Northeasterly Wind blew on 8-April. And it turned wet again as the cool and dry wind weakened on 10-April.
The sub-regional weather in Northern Vietnam in mid April 2023:
- Northeast: fog, clouds, rain, damp air, 20-28oC;
- Northwest: sun, clouds, some isolated rain, 20-28oC, 19-33oC in Lao Cai & Lai Chau, sun, 20-37oC in Son La and Dien Bien;
- Lowlands: light rain, moist air, cloud, 23-27oC.

- Northeast: dry air, clouds, sun, 23-33oC;
- Northwest: sun, clouds, 24-34oC in Yen Bai, Hoa Binh, part of Lai Chau; 23-39oC in Lao Cai, Son La , Dien Bien, part of Lai Chau;
- Lowlands: dry air, sun, cloud, 23-34oC.
Most of the Northwest of Vietnam experienced a heat strike from mid April. The temperatures turned nice after the arrival of the new spell of Northeasterly Wind on 24-April and there was some rain.
The Northeast and lowlands continued to enjoy lovely sunshine with pleasant temperatures. When the cool Northeasterly Wind hit the regions enjoyed some cloudy days, some isolated rain, lovely temperatures.

- Northwest: rain, clouds, 18-29oC in Yen Bai, Hoa Binh; 20-30oC in Lai Chau; 22-32oC in Lao Cai, Son La; 20-33oC in Dien Bien;
- Lowlands: dry air, sun, clouds, isolated rain, 20-29oC.
2/The North of the Central Region (Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh)
The North of the Central Region of Vietnam had perfect weather with sunshine and pleasant temperatures at the beginning of April 2023. The temperatures were 23-32oC.
There were some places with high temperatures due to expanding high-temperature air troughs and foehn wind (some places in Nghe An and Ha Tinh).
The arrival of the cool and dry Northeasterly Wind caused lovely weather with dry air, clouds and 24-29oC.
The growing hot air troughs from after mid April caused high temperatures in places: 24-34oC to the north and 29-36oC to the south of this region.
The arrival of the cool Northeasterly Wind on 24-April caused some rain and lovely temperaures putting an end to the heat strike. The temperatures were 24-29oC.
3/ The Central Coast of Vietnam (Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Hue, Da Nang, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Phu Yen, Binh Dinh, Khanh Hoa, Ninh Thuan, Binh Thuan).
The Central Coast enjoyed good weather at the beginning of April 2023 with dry air, pleasant sunshine and lovely temperatures mostly.
- From Quang Binh to Hue: some patchy rain, mostly sun, 23-32oC mostly, 27-36oC in Quang Binh;
- From Da Nang to Quang Ngai: some rain, some clouds and mostly sun, 24-32oC;
- From Quy Nhon to Tuy Hoa: mostly sun and clouds, 24-32oC;
- From Nha Trang to Phan Thiet: sun, 24-32oC.
The weather in mid April, 2023:
- From Quang Binh to Hue: sun, 24-32oC mostly, 26-38oC in Quang Binh;
- From Da Nang to Quang Ngai: some clouds and mostly sun, 23-32oC;
- From Quy Nhon to Tuy Hoa: mostly sun and clouds, 23-32oC;
- From Nha Trang to Phan Thiet: sun, 23-34oC.

4/ The Central Highlands of Vietnam (Kon Tum, Gia Lai, Dak Lak, Lam Dong)
The Central Highlands had lovely weather at the beginning of April in 2023: sunshine with pleasant temperatures of 19-33oC mostly, 22-34oC in Buon Ma Thuot.
Unseasonal rain found across the region helped much needed water for agriculture.
In mid April, the high temperature air trough caused hot weather in Kon Tum and Buon Ma Thuot (21-36oC). Most other places enjoyed sun, 20-34oC. There was uneasonal rain across the region.
The third week of April was with nice weather: showers and pleasant temperature of 22-33oC.
The region went under the impact of the high temperature air troughs and had high temperatures in several places on low altitudes in the last 10 days of April 2023. The temperatures were 20-34oC and 26-36oC in some places in Kon Tum and Dak Lak.
5/The South of Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Tay Ninh, Vung Tau, Dong Nai, and the Mekong Delta)
The South of Vietnam entered April with unusual rain in the dry season. The temperatures were 24-33oC mostly, 26-35oC in Ho Chi Minh City, Dong Nai, Binh Duong, Tay Ninh.
Unseasonal rain found across the region helped with much needed water for agriculture and to stop saltwater intrusion.
Unseasonal rain continued through mid April 2023. The temperatures were 24-34oC in the Mekong Delta and 26-37oC in Ho Chi Minh City, Dong Nai, Binh Duong and Tay Ninh.
In the third week, the shower enjoyed heavy rain temporarily putting an end of a heat strike. The temperatures were 24-34oC mostly and 26-36oC in Tay Ninh.
In the last 10 days of April 2023, the South of Vietnam continued to have some daily short-lived rain and scorching temperatures in all places including the Mekong Delta. The temperatures were 26-36oC in the Mekong Delta and 28-38oC in Saigon, Dong Nai, Tay Ninh, Binh Duong, Binh Phuoc.
