Vietnam Weather in July 2024
Country: Vietnam

July is summer in Northern Vietnam, the dry and hot season in the Central Coast, the rainy season in the Central Highlands and Southern Vietnam.

In Northern Vietnam the temperatures are more likely pleasant in the Northeast (Ha Giang, Lang Son, Cao Bang, Bac Kan...) and in the extreme Northwest (ie. Son La, Dien Bien and Lai Chau; but more likely to be hot in the rest of the Northwest of Vietnam: Hoa Binh, Yen Bai and Lao Cai.

Besides, part of the Northwest of Vietnam and the lowland of northern Vietnam, and most of the Central Coast of Vietnam may come under impact of growing hot-air troughs, which are often present in the atmosphere to the west (over Laos) or northwest of Vietnam (over southwestern China), which are also attributed to dry air and hot temperatures in these places.

There may be typhoons or tropical depressions which often make landfall in northern Vietnam or North of the Central Coast of Vietnam in July. During the time under impact of a typhoon, boat trips are canceled for a few days on Halong Bay, between Co To and Quan Lan Islands (Quang Ninh Province) and the shore.

Daily rain in July is found in the Central Highlands and Southern Vietnam. The temperatures in these two regions are mostly pleasant this month.

It is worth noting that Vietnam’s climate is strongly influenced by global climate change. The skinny and elongated geography of Vietnam with over 3,000km of coastline makes it more vulnerable to changes in the ocean, too. During the year with El Nino impact, the level of temperatures are visibly higher and much smaller rainfalls all over the country; and it is vice versa during the year with La Nina impact which causes more typhoons, more rain and lower temperatures.

Monsoons in Vietnam in July

In July there are three main monsoons affecting Vietnam:
- The Southeasterly Wind which causes pleasant temperatures in most of the North and which may cause showers in the affected regions;
- The Westerly Wind from Laos, which is a foehn wind and which affects part of the Northwest of Vietnam (Hoa Binh, Lao Cai, Yen Bai), the lowland of northern Vietnam, and part of the Central Coast (from Thanh Hoa to Hue), which causes dry and warm or hot temperatures ;
-  The Southwesterly Wind, which comes from the Equator which causes daily short-lived rain and pleasant temperatures in the Central Highlands and southern Vietnam.
Besides, there may be more days that the lowland of Northern Vietnam is to come under the impact of the Easterly Monsoon which often causes pleasant temperatures in the region.
- The sea and the offshore islands in northern Vietnam are to come under impact of the Southeasterly Wind in the North and Southwesterly Wind in the South in July : pleasant temperatures, calm sea mostly.

What to expect from your holidays to Vietnam in July, where to go in Vietnam in July?

Taking the general weather conditions in Vietnam into consideration, for those travelers planning  trips to Vietnam or those who are on holidays in Vietnam in July, then there July be some notes as follows:

- July could be or could be not a good time to travel to the far-northern mountains of Vietnam given that it could rain or it could be dry. While the rain in July is mostly short-lived, but bare hills or steep mountain slopes without forest July pose dangers in or right after heavy rain. Flash floods have happened and accidents have been caused by extreme weather in the mountains. It might be good to consult a local travel agency in Vietnam with good experience to know if a certain July is good to travel to the far northern mountains of Vietnam.

The Red River Delta is not really a good place to travel to in July. There may be days with hot temperatures. And there may be tropical depressions or typhoons in the North in July. If so, then expect pleasant temperatures but torrential rain as well as flash floods, landslides in the mountains.

In case of typhoons or tropical depressions, then travel between the inland and the islands in the affected areas are disrupted. Given climate change nowadays, this applies to islands all over Vietnam from the north to the south.

- The Central Coast of Vietnam often has sunny weather with hot temperatures in July. The hot temperatures in July could be caused by the foehn wind from Laos or by growing hot air troughs which are often present to the west or northwest of Vietnam, or in southwest of China or in Laos. But in a year under impact by La Nina, expect more rain and pleasant temperatures in all over Vietnam including the Central Coast.

The region to the south of the Central Coast from Da Nang to Binh Thuan is more likely to enjoy sunshine with more tolerable temperatures. It is more likely you have good holidays in this region with sunshine and tolerable or pleasant temperatures.

- July is not a good time for birding tours in Northern Vietnam as it is the nesting and mating time of many bird species and most migratory bird species have left the region. But it could still be a fine time for birdwatching in: Bach Ma National Park, Cat Tien National Park, Da Lat, Bidoup-Nui Ba National Park, Deo Nui San (Di Linh Plateau, Lam Dong Province). It is worth noting that July is also the nesting and mating time in these places, but birds are still to be observed ; wildlife is more quiet than normal.

- July may be or may not be a great time for beach holidays or for island vacations in all over Vietnam. The sea is calm all over the country in July. It is worth to note that these are on the conditions that there is no typhoon or tropical depression. In case of typhoons or tropical depressions, expect rough sea all over the country and travel between the inland and the islands are disrupted.

The best beaches to visit in Vietnam in July include Sam Son Beach (Thanh Hoa), Cua Lo Beach (Nghe An), Dong Hoi (Quang Binh Province), Da Nang, Hoi An, Cam Ranh Beach (Khanh Hoa Province), Ninh Chu Beach (Phan Rang-Thap Cham City, Ninh Thuan Province), Mui Ne Beach (Phan Thiet City, Binh Thuan Province), Ho Tram Beach (Xuyen Moc District, Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province), Long Hai Beach (Ba Ria-Vung Tau), Vung Tau (Vung Tau City, Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province).

For those who plan a trip to the Central Highlands, you are to have a good holiday ahead with cloudy, sunny days and pleasant temperatures. There July be daily rain in the region but it is mostly short-lived rain which each lasts for half an hour or an hour. Be extra careful if you plan to travel between Da Lat and Nha Trang via the Khanh Le Pass which is vulnerable to landslides in rainy times.

Those planning holidays to Southern Vietnam in July, then you are likely to have a good time. The temperatures are more likely to be pleasant weather with daily shortlived rain. Avoid traveling in the traffic in flooded streets which are often found in heavy rain. The beaches in Vung Tau, Long Hai and Mui Ne, Phan Thiet are the best options near Saigon Ho Chi Minh City.

Con Dao Islands, Phu Quoc Island are to have either sunny or cloudy days with lovely temperatures of 26-31oC. But it has happened that these islands may be under impact of a typhoon or tropical depression in July and in such cases, expect rain and disrupt in travel between the island and the inland. Some streets on the Phu Quoc Island may be flooded under heavy rain.
