The reason is that part of the Northwest is under impact of the Lao Wind which blows from Laos and which is a foehn wind.
Besides, part of the Northwest of Vietnam and North of the Central Coast of Vietnam are often to come under impact of growing hot-air troughs, which are often present in the atmosphere to the west (over Laos) or northwest (over China) of Vietnam, which are also attributed to dry air and hot temperatures in these places.
Monsoons in Vietnam in April
In April there are four monsoons affecting Vietnam:
- Northeasterly Monsoon causes pleasant temperatures in part of the North . The Northeasterly Wind in April is often not to impact the Central Coast of Vietnam.
- The Southeasterly Wind which causes pleasant temperatures in the North ;
- The Westerly Wind from Laos, which is a foehn wind and which affects part of the Northwest of Vietnam (Hoa Binh, Son La, Dien Bien, Lai Chau, Lao Cai, Yen Bai) and part of the Central Coast (from Thanh Hoa to Hue), which causes dry and warm or hot temperatures ;
- The Southwesterly Wind, which comes mostly from the Bengal Bay in April and which is also a foehn wind causing dry and hot temperatures in part of the Central Highlands on low altitudes, hot temperatures in Southern Vietnam.
There may be more days that the lowland of Northern Vietnam is to come under the impact of the Southeasterly Monsoon or Easterly Monsoon which often causes pleasant temperatures in the region.
- The sea and the offshore islands in northern Vietnam are to come under impact of the Southeasterly Wind in April : pleasant temperatures, calm sea.
- The sea in the Central Region and Southern Vietnam is to come under the impact of the Southwesterly Wind or Westerly Wind which causes dry air and warm temperatures in places. The sea in these regions are to enjoy a calm time in April.

- April is a good time to travel to the far-northern mountains of Vietnam when it is mostly dry and the temperatures are more likely pleasant mostly.
The Red River Delta is also a good place to travel to in April. Ninh Binh is among the top choices for countryside landscape all the month. Those who embark on luxury cruises on Halong Bay may have foggy sometimes at the beginning of the month.
- The Central Coast of Vietnam often has sunny weather. Due to the foehn wind which may be strong in April that part of the Central Coast from Thanh Hoa to Quang Tri may have hot days with strong sun. At the beginning of April 2024, there was a brief heat strike all over Vietnam with high temperatures reaching 36-38oC. The Central Highlands and Southern Vietnam had been in a serious drought.
Coming towards the end of April, there were mild spells of the Northeasterly Wind which caused nice temperatures in Northern Vietnam.

Part of the Northwest of Vietnam (including Hoa Binh, Son La, Dien Bien, part of Lai Chau and Lao Cai), the Central Coast of Vietnam, the Central Highlands of Vietnam and Southern Vietnam suffered from dry heat, strong sun and hot temperatures with the highs reaching 36-40oC.

The first half of the last decade of April 2024, there were weak spells of the Northeasterly Wind in northern Vietnam which caused some rain and pleasant temperatures in most places. The second half of the last 10 days of April 2024 marked a heat strike across Vietnam with high temperatures in most places with the exception of those on high altitudes.
