The former residence of Hoang A Tuong in Bac Ha (Lao Cai Province) was built from 1914-1921. This was a residence and a working place of the father-son Hoang Yen Tchao and Hoang A Tuong who were chiefs of Bac Ha back that time. The family was of Tay origin but some may still refer to the residence as the Hmong King’s Residence in Bac Ha. The residence has a mixed architecture of French and Chinese styles.

The residence stretches on a piece of land of 10,000m2 with the surrounding walls have several embrasures. The site on a low hill was picked by a reputed geomancer. The whole complex faces east leaning against another hill in the back and overlooking a stream in the front.
There are 36 rooms in the residence which were for the family as well as for employees of the administrative system in Bac Ha.
The Hoang Family was supported by the French colonialists and they were authorized the monopoly of doing business in opium, salts,… They owned huge agricultural land in the area and hired several peasants back then.
A visit to the former residence of Hoang A Tuong takes approximately 1-1.5 hour. The site is right in Bac Ha Town, a few hundred meters from Bac Ha Market. Paradissa organize day trips from Lao Cai and adventure tours from Hanoi to visit Bac Ha and other nearby tourist attractions.
