Historical Context

In 1945, the Japanese surrendered in the World War II and Viet Minh led by Ho Chi Minh, representative of the majority of the Vietnamese people, took a revolt, seized the political power and proclaimed the People's Democratic Republic of Vietnam as an independent country on 2nd September, 1945.

But then the Allies came in and agreements were made among the Big Powers that the French was the rightful owner of Indochina (Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos) and was to have sovereignty over Indochina again. British troops were installed to help the weakening French to gain back political and military control over southern Vietnam. In the North, Chiang Kai-shek troops poured in. Along with bringing in the so-called “Vietnam Nationalist Party” whose members didn't even speak Vietnamese properly, these troops also brought in a disaster of louses due to filthy condition of living. Vietnam quickly fell into a turmoil occupied by different troops.

On the night of December, 19th 1946 President Ho Chi Minh delivered the Declaration of War on the French after successive efforts for peaceful resolutions to maintain that Vietnam has its own sovereignty and independence. The Government of the People's Democratic Republic of Vietnam would take to the jungles and mountains of Dinh Hoa to conduct the war against the French. Dinh Hoa was the Capital of the Resistance War of Vietnam then.
