0800 A.M depart Siem Reap and travel 70km on a country road to the forgotten temple of Beng Mealea. The temple was built about the same time as Angkor Wat (12th century) and has a similar style of architecture. Have time for a thorough visit to Beng Mealea which is still invaded by the forest nowadays and which bears a wild atmosphere.
Phnom Kulen was where Cambodia was proclaimed independence from Java by King Jayavarman II in 802. The mountain is considered as a birth place of the Khmer Empire and is highly respected by the Khmer People as a holy site. For the Khmers, a trip to Phnom Kulen is a pilgrimage back to their origin.
We’ll start our visit with the notorious Tuol Sleng Museum. This former school was used as a prison by Pol Pot's security forces and became the largest center for detention and torture during the rule of the Khmer Rouge.
Have a day to explore the countryside outside of Phnom Penh and visit the temples of Takeo.
Morning visit to Angkor Thom South Gate. Then, get back on the bus to drive to the Bayon in the center of Angkor Thom.
Depart Siem Reap for a one and a half hour cruise in a converted traditional sampan to Kampong Phluk.
Transfer to Tonle Sap for an interesting day on the Great Lake. Visit Chong Kneas floating village by boat and then continue over the lake to Preak Toal, about an hour and a half away.
