Kampong Cham Province is located in the southeast of Cambodia, bordered to the east by Vietnam, to the north-east by Kratie Province, to the north-west by Kampong Thom Province, to the west by Kampong Chnang, and to the south by Prey Veng Province. Kampong Cham is the transport hub to the North-East of Cambodia and between Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand.

Farming and fishing are the main livelihood of the local inhabitants. Besides, Kampong Cham offers green rubber plantations, some of the best quality Khmer silk and the traditional Khmer scarves. Kampong Cham also has many Angkorian and pre-Angkorian sites for the visitors. Biking along the Mekong in Kampong Cham is one of the best experiences for the bikers in Cambodia.

The provincial capital of Kampong Cham Province is Kampong Cham City, more of a quiet riverside town. The riverfront is definitely worth a promenade and a try of local drinks. Alternatively, you can cross the bamboo bridge to the pristine beaches on the Mekong River in the dry season. There are simple guesthouses in Kampong Cham City, luxury hotels are not available as of writing.

Kampong Cham City is 120 km north-east of Phnom Penh and 228 km south-west of Kratie. You can travel between Phnom Penh – Kampong Cham – Kratie by land or by waterway. The boat trip between Phnom Penh and Kampong Cham takes 2 hours and that between Kampong Cham and Kratie takes 3 hours.

There is an international border crossing between Vietnam and Cambodia in Kampong Cham Province at Trapeang Phlong (and Xa Mat, in Tay Ninh Province, Vietnam).
