Takeo Province is located to the south-west of Cambodia, bordered to the east and the north by Kandal Province, to the south by Vietnam, to the west by Kampot and Kampong Speu Provinces. The provincial capital is Takeo Town, 77km south of Phnom Penh via NH2.
There are several pre-Angkorian sites built around 5-8th century in Takeo Province. Though little is known of Cambodian history during this period, visiting these sites may help you more understanding of the Khmer civilization in the early times as well as the Khmer culture nowadays.

Tonle Bati is a picnic lake popular for the Khmer at weekend. Nearby, there are Angkorian-era Ta Prohm Temple built by King Jayavarman VII, Yeay Peau Temple and Tonle Bati Wat. These sites are 33km south of Phnom Penh via NH2.
Phnomn Chisor is another Angkorian-era temple built upon a hill by King Suryavarman, 52km south of Phnom Penh via NH2.
Angkor Borei was a walled city dating back to the 5th century A.D. The area was the capital of Water Chenla in the 8th century A.D. Phnom Da is a hill crowned with a laterite temple from the 8th century. The sites are 20km east of Takeo and 100km from Phnom Penh.
Takeo has an international border crossing with Vietnam at Phnom Den (Takeo) and Tinh Bien (Chau Doc Town, An Giang Province, Vietnam).
Except for NH2 which is in fair condition, the roads in the province are in bad shape due to floods in the wet season. In Takeo Province, travel by waterway is as popular as by road. There are trains traveling from Phnom Penh via Takeo to Kampot and Sihanoukville and vice versa.
