Saigon started its history in 1698 when Lord Nguyen of Dang Trong (southern Vietnam) sent Nguyen Huu Canh to Dong Nai to set up the administration system under Lord Nguyen rule. Nguyen Huu Canh set up Gia Dinh Province with two districts: Phuoc Long (Bien Hoa) and Tan Binh (Saigon).

In 1708 Mac Cuu asked Lord Nguyen to annex his land into Lord Nguyen’s territory for protection.
In 1757, Lord Nguyen established the administration in Tan Chau, Chau Doc.
From 1779, the Gia Dinh Province (later Saigon) included: Saigon, Bien Hoa, Dinh Tuong, Vinh Long, An Giang, Ha Tien.

1/ 1802 – 1808: Gia Dinh Tran (Town)

In 1802 Nguyen Anh became the King of re-unified Dai Viet (the name was changed to Viet Nam in 1804). Gia Dinh was divided into different Tran - a lower-status administration system: Gia Dinh, Phien An, Bien Hoa, Dinh Tuong, Vinh Long, Ha Tien. The administration of the other five Tran was based in Gia Dinh Tran.

2/ 1808-1832: Gia Dinh Thanh (City)

With the organization of the administration changed uniformly all over Vietnam, Gia Dinh Tran was changed to Gia Dinh Thanh. Gia Dinh Thanh (City) administered the five Tran (Towns) in southern Vietnam.

3/ 1832 – 1867: Gia Dinh Province

After the death of the Chief Le Van Duyet, King Ming Mang divided southern Vietnam into 6 provinces: Phien An, Bien Hoa, Dinh Tuong, Vinh Long, An Giang, Ha Tien. Then changed the name Phien An to Gia Dinh. Each province would have a separate chief and there was no more a General Governor for all provinces. Then came the French who took over the Saigon Citadel and destroyed it to build Saigon City or Saigon Citadel.

In 1862, the French invaded Vietnam and divided Gia Dinh into: Tan Binh, Tan An and Tay Ninh Provinces.

4/ 1885-1889: Gia Dinh Prefecture

1867 The French change Gia Dinh Province to Sai Gon Province with two prefectures: Binh Duong, Binh Long. From 1872 Ngai An (Thu Duc) Prefecture was added to Sai Gon Province. Earlier Ngai An belonged to Bien Hoa.

In 1885 the name changed from Sai Gon to Gia Dinh Prefecture - (Arrondissement) (to differentiate with Saigon City).

5/ 1889 – 1975: Gia Dinh Province

In 1889 Gia Dinh was renamed to a province, one of 20 provinces in southern Vietnam which had originally six provinces.

In 1944, Tan Binh Province was added to the list of provinces. This province dissolved in 1945 after the August Revolution.

In 1956 the area of Cu Chi (being under Gia Dinh Province Administration) was separated to make up two new provinces: Hau Nghia and Binh Duong.

From 1975, there has been no more a province called Gia Dinh in Vietnam.
